People boycotting the new OB season need to get the fuck over themselves. I get it when Lexa died how stupid it was. They had a great story going on with good representation and then they killed Lexa so Clarke could go back to the straight hero boy.
We get it. That one sucked.
Delphine has NOTHING to do with a story like that. In this series, her story was running independent of a love story for the entire last season. Cosima is still gay. She still has women love interests. They didn’t just kill off her sexuality with the death of Delphine like I feel the 100 was essentially doing.
The OB writers aren’t assholes either. They’re not bullying actors off the set. They’re not setting any cliche storylines up and weren’t looking for shock factor by killing off this character.
Tat is exactly right. These characters are more than just their sexuality. If writers had to avoid killing off any character based off of race and sexuality then the storytelling would suffer.
Yes representation is important. That’s why it irks me when these characters are killed off in favour of a straight love story or their actors getting bullied off the set. That’s when it’s a problem.
But for a show like orphan black? Fuck no. Delphine was a character we all loved and hated. And she happened to be bisexual. She got herself into a lot of hot water. She was killed. Paul was killed also. No one threw a fit about that because it was part of the story. What makes this any different? Because she was part of the LGBT community. That reduces her to her sexuality. That’s wrong.
And before anyone yells at me, I’m a queer trans boy who lived as a lesbian for quite a while. I know what it’s like to be under represented. But we cannot start sacrificing good storylines and storytelling to keep every queer character in safety.
Relax everyone. Tat is a huge supporter. She’s been nothing short of amazing for the community. Her comments weren’t meant as offensive to anyone. She didn’t even say anything offensive in my opinion.
Jesus Christ.
Thank you.
