Why is love at first sight okay for straight people but for lesbians it’s “u-hauling”? Why do straight people get to have passionate love stories but for us it’s just “the lesbian urge to merge”? Why are our relationships doomed to be too intense to last? Why do we suffer “lesbian bed death” but straight people’s relationships simply mature? Why do we have to question every single thing we do as a couple because we aren’t allowed to love with the same validity and purity that straight people are given?

I feel like y'all should reblog this because straight people seem to have no idea that “gay marriage” doesn’t mean that homophobia is over.

From the first song, it was apparent this was going to be a very special show. “Come on an ache with me,” sang Laura Jane Grace, as she set the tone for a musical journey detailing her lifelong struggle with gender dysphoria. Accompanied by drummer, Atom Willard and bassist, Marc Hudson, Grace crafted a perfect, almost chronological set list that complimented excerpts from her still-in-the-works memoir. Unlike when I saw Mike Doughty read passages from his “Book of Drugs,” where the mood was light and stories entertaining, Grace’s readings truly gave a glimpse into her tortured soul.

The three piece gave a vastly different performance than Grace’s traditional shows with her band, Against Me!. An Against Me! show is pure adrenaline, the songs almost get lost in the thrashing guitars and overly enthusiastic crowd. The Devouring Mothers were more emotive, more intimate, though Grace’s ferocity still was evident. Songs such as Pretty Girls (The Mover)or Because of the Shamewere particularly intensethe former had Grace visibly emotional. Pretty Girls was given a more spoken word treatment, specifically when Grace substituted the original lyrics more blatantly referencing transgender feelings. Framing the songs within the context of her career, and boughts with dysphoria breathed new life into the music and made for a powerful show.

I could not have asked for a more perfect show, as it further cemented the fact that Laura Jane Grace is one of the most outstanding songwriters and important artists ever. She mentioned a new Against Me! album is in the works, and here’s hoping her memoir will be released in the near future.
