Baker’s Dozen: J. Minto
In our Baker’s Dozen feature we highlight photographs we love that didn’t quite make the Daily Dozen.
My journey into photography started when I wanted to be in a band. My lack of musical abilities kept me from that goal, so I turned to documenting live shows and the lives of touring musicians. When I saw this image of the band Against Me! performing, I was drawn in by the moment the photo captured.
Lead singer Laura Jane Grace is caught in the middle of strumming chords on her guitar. Her long hair is whipping forward as she moves with the music, and I can feel the energy coming off the stage. In the background you can see bass player Inge Johansson jumping in the air, framed within the stand and cord hanging from the microphone.
This image was shot at a focal length of 50mm, which helps contain the action in a nice rectangle while also pulling you in for a closer view. The black and white tones are well done and remind me of what award-winning music photographer Jim Marshall was creating when he shot bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. As someone who spent a good many years photographing music, I’ve always loved images that can make you feel like you’re in the moment of a live show, and I believe this image does that well.
