This is really awesome. Laura Jane Grace (trans frontwoman of Against Me!) is reaching out to Tay to get this girl noticed. I’m actually seeing Against Me! perform this Wednesday in Sacramento and have been a huge fan since long before Laura came out as trans.
Here’s one of my fav songs of theirs (featuring Laura, before she transitioned to female and Tegan, from Tegan and Sara):

After seeing Against Me! put on an amazing show at Riot Fest, I want to take a second to talk about Laura Jane Grace, their guitarist and lead singer, and how inspirational she is.
In 2012, after struggling with lifelong gender dysphoria and depression that lead to addiction, Laura Jane Grace came out as a transgender female. She had been playing with Against Me! for about five years when she came out, and as a previously presenting male, said that she felt that she was putting on the role of an “angry white male in a punk band”, a factor that contributed to her worsening addiction. Although in their early years she was presenting as a male, she wrote lyrics such as “If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman / My mother once told me she would have named me Laura / I would grow up to be strong and beautiful like her / One day I’d find an honest man to make my husband”. She described her dysphoria as “The cliché is that you’re a woman trapped in a man’s body, but it’s not that simple. It’s a feeling of detachment from your body and from yourself. And it’s shitty, man. It’s really fucking shitty.”
Now, Laura is currently undergoing the transitional process, and she’s receiving incredible support from the punk community as she does. Their most recent album is dedicated to her struggle, titled Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
When I got to see them play, Laura blew me away. She came on the stage wearing a shirt reading “Gender is Over” and she absolutely rocked it; she sang with such passion about her battle, and the beauty of it was the way that the crowd sang with her. Her story, and the support she’s received, is so inspiring; although I don’t identify as transgender, I loved seeing such a high-profile singer come out as transgender and show that she’s fighting the same fight as so many other transgender people, and people are accepting her for it.
So thank you, Laura. I hope you can be the beacon of light so many transgender people need.
