The Hugs:

You put your arms around me and I’m home.

“I’m really glad you’re back”

Although we all love and crave the Elliot and Olivia hugs, they don’t come around very often. But in a way, that could sort of be a good thing if thought about in the right light. They might not be the most physical beings with each other, but in those rare moments when they both let their guards down and just give in, its enough to leave us, as well as them, reeling. We can feel it.

The first time, it happens almost by surprise. Elliot had just rushed to the hospital with the sole thought that his newborn baby had almost died, he’d almost lost a child. A parents worst nightmare. On his way into the hospital room, he passes Olivia whose shirt is stained in blood. He panics, he can’t think about that now. He needs to see his baby. And so he does, he goes in and holds that newborn for the first time and you can see the relief and adoration flood through his eyes. Then he remembers: Olivia. She was in the accident too, she could have been hurt. His best friend, his partner. He could have easily lost her, but he didn’t. She was standing there when he passed by, seemingly unharmed. When he finally goes out to face her, he finds her still leaning against the wall where he left her, and the moment they lock eyes you can see the mutual relief wash over both of them. Kathy and the baby are okay, they’re all alive. She asks how they are, as any good friend or partner would do. He almost whispers his response before turning to walk down the hall, Olivia in tow. And thats when it happens. Like a gunshot. Elliot turns on his heel and pulls her into him, its the only thing he can think to do. Though he would never admit it, he was terrified that he’d lost her when he got the call. But here she was, warm in his arms and sinking into his embrace. For those precious few seconds, they give into each other. She’s okay.

The second time, its not about relief. Its about loss, its about pain. Its about her needing her best friend to hold her and reassure her that she isn’t alone. Its about him realizing that, once again, it could have easily been her that got killed. Its about them falling into one another, being that support system for each other when they both need it the most. He’s her rock, she’s his stability. Olivia had just watched Sonya die in her arms. A friend, a co-worker. And it broke every last piece of her heart that hadn’t already been shattered over the past twelve years in their unit. She needed the one person who knew her better than anyone, the only person who could pick her up from a break like this. But he wasn’t there, she needed to keep it together. Then suddenly, she didn’t. She turned down the hall and there he was, the one man with the power to help her heal. They spot each other and suddenly hes jogging to her because he just cant get there fast enough. He sees her break just before he reaches her, hears the crack in her voice as she announces how she’s glad he’s back. Though he knows it isn’t her intention, he feels guilty. He should have come back sooner, he shouldn’t have left her to do this case by herself. This was too close, she could have been killed. At this realization, he squeezes his eyes shut and, for the second time, gives in. They hold onto each other and he feels her try to hold back a shaky sob. She’s broken and all he wants to do is put her back together, seeing her like this kills him. Once they pull apart, she tries to play it off fine, but he knows her better than anyone. He sees right through it. They simply look at each other for a moment then, before either of them speaks, and his eyes say it all: She isn’t alone in this. He’s with her no matter what.

These tiny moments, no matter how short or rare, prove something. They prove that these two cops, these two people are connected on a level that goes above and beyond. Her pain is his, his joy and his relief washes over her just as thoroughly. They’re one heart in two bodies, the other one’s better half.
